l'origine
The Académie de Port-Royal was founded in l969 by two artists, Claude Schürr and Jean-Maxime Relange following the closure of the century-old Painting and Drawing studios of the Académie Julian. In l995 the Académie met the approval of the Paris Academy Rectorship under the denomination of "Private Establishment of Free Superior Learning"
"Following the great tradition of French open studios, the Académie de Port-Royal answers the needs of different levels of age, artistic ability and nationality. Everyone who chooses the Académie is welcome. Seventy six different nationalities have worked within its walls, many young students have taken their first steps here, others, older, have increased their knowledge, and others, even older have found a youth which they considered lost. Many have become professionals, some are now renowned and honour the Académie de Port-Royal.
It has always been of prime importance to us to pass on the fundamental principles of the profession of traditional painting and drawing. This is an ambitious task, since some students are of a reticent character, others, influenced by shallow fashion are tempted to race ahead without stopping to learn. We endeavour to listen to each artist - each one is unique - and convince them that freedom of expression is not possible until they accept the keystones of painting. "
Claude Schürr, co-founder of the Académie de Port-Royal
